Senate set to amend Cybercrime Act, requests opinion from stakeholders 

The Senate Joint Committee on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Cyber Security, and National Security and Intelligence has requested memoranda from stakeholders in the digital communication sectors and the general public as contributions to a Bill amending the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention Act of 2015.

This is stated in a notice of a public hearing issued by Senator Shuiab Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, and made available to journalists on Friday.

According to the committee, the measure is part of attempts to enhance internet governance in Nigeria.

Remember that the Cybercrime Act of 2015 was passed to protect essential national information infrastructure, improve cyber security, defend computer systems and networks, electronic communications, data and computer programs, intellectual property rights, and privacy rights.

The Act also sets the procedural powers for cybercrime investigation and electronic evidence collecting when investigating criminal offenses.

The Senate Committee stated in the public notice that the hearing would take place on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, in Conference Rom 301 of the Senate Building.

The Senate committee requested that all parties, including government institutions, ICT and cybersecurity professionals, and others, submit memoranda.

“Memoranda, which should be submitted within one week in five (5) soft copies and forty-five (45) hard copies, should be addressed to the Clerk Senate Committee on ICT & Cyber Security, Room 3.8 White House Building, National Assembly Complex Abuja, ” the committee said.
